In child abuse cases, silence a death sentence

John and Linda Dollar of Florida are accused of torturing five of their adopted children ("Torture-case pair to return to Fla.," Tuesday). The alleged torture included beating them with hammers, administering electric shocks and pulling out the children's toenails. I don't understand why not one person ever heard any screams coming form the Dollars' home. Were the children locked in sound proof rooms? Or, as often happens, did nobody want to get involved? I can't understand how some people could be so heartless as not to report suspected child abuse. Silence can kill.
