Dear Mr. Bobrowsky:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Victims' Rights Amendment. I
appreciate you sharing your concerns about this legislation with me.
In January, Senator Jon Kyl introduced S.J.Res. 1, which proposes an amendment
to the Constitution granting victims of violent crime the right
to reasonable and timely notice of any public proceeding involving the crime and
notice of any release or escape of the accused, as well as the
right to be included in the criminal proceedings, and the right to just and
timely claims to restitution from the offender. Changing the justice
system in this way should not be taken lightly. This legislation has been
reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and now awaits consideration
before the full Senate. I will keep your views in mind as we debate this
legislation. I appreciate your letter. Your communication helps me to
better serve you in the Senate.
