From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Letter to the editor U.S. leads world in juvenile murders by Jacques Bobrowsky Boca Raton June 21, 2005 Last Thursday evening, a mother allegedly stabbed her 5-year-old daughter because she was in fear that her husband would take her daughter away in their divorce. I only hope that this "alleged" mother is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If history serves me correctly, then I am sure once this woman obtains a defense attorney, she will be portrayed as the victim. Did she have diminished mental capacity at the time? Did she know the difference between right and wrong? Surely, these questions will be in the forefront of the defense. But the reality is that anyone who hurts a child must be psychologically unstable and therefore a threat to society. Our prisons are full of them. In 1999, 1,789 juveniles were murdered in our country. That number translates to the United States leading the developed world in juvenile murders. Statistics show that most crimes against children are committed by the custodial parent. Parents by law are supposed to protect their children and keep them out of harm's way. I only hope that this woman will never, ever, ever have another opportunity to hurt her daughter again. Copyright © 2005, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
